The notation 'S' stands for Warp Ship. Numbering the ships make it easier to note which ship a person is talking about when discussing tactics. The Warp Ships are all facing away from the center so there's no singular spot in which they can be destroyed from afar. However, the ships are closely packed together, making them prime targets for Eagle/Orbital stratagems.
